Sampling Packages

Sampling packages are designed to simplify the use of N-WATCH by defining the number of samples to collect (package size) as well as the approximate time to collect samples.  The suggested sampling times should help benchmark when the next sample should be collected.  If significant rain events are prevalent, additional sampling times can be added.  There will be an associated cost for each added sampling time beyond the package size selected.  Visit with your adviser about sampling package price information and the cost of adding additional sampling dates (prices available for registered site advisers).

Suggested times to collect samples:  Spring Thaw, Pre-Plant or after Spring N, Early Growth (V2-V3, and Post-Harvest)

BASIC 4 PLUS PACKAGE: (5 sampling dates including Inventory Sampling)

1 Inventory Sampling Date. Includes a one-time positional evaluation of both nitrate and ammonium N with an additional four sampling dates to track nitrate and ammonium-N over time (Inventory). The one-time positional evaluation of nitrate and ammonium-N across the 30-inch knife spacing of an applicator provides a pictorial of the concentration of nitrate and ammonium-N in relation to position across the distance of the applicator spacing. Eleven samples are collected three inches apart using the N-WATCH sampling template. Samples are collected at 0-1 ft. and 1-2 ft. with a total of 22 samples for this special test. Individual sample results are represented graphically using a bar chart of nitrate and ammonium concentrations in the 0-1 ft. and 1-2 ft. soil profile. The average nitrate and ammonium concentration is calculated at each soil depth and the mean is posted on the N-WATCH report as a sampling date as well.

4 Tracking Sampling Dates. The additional Tracking samples will provide an estimate of nitrate and ammonium-N concentration in the 0-1 ft. and 1-2 ft. soil profile over time.

LATE SEASON NITRATE TEST (LSNT): (ONE-TIME TEST)

The LSNT is offered for those farmers that want to determine soil nitrate-N when the corn plant is 6 to 12 inches tall (soil surface to plant whorl) and interpret the results as described in Nitrogen Fertilizer Recommendations for Corn in Iowa, Iowa State University (Pm-1714). A hyperlink to the publication can be found under “Management Tools” in the N-WATCH Online command bar (to the right). This is a one-time test taken when the corn is 4-6 inches tall. The nitrate-N concentration detected at the site will be interpreted according to Pm-1714, based upon the information provided upon site registration.
